At the Thai New Year there are rites and rituals that
people participate in as part of the New Year blessings and
Buddhist merit-making, One of these is the splashing of water.
Water runs deep in the Thai New Year traditions, both as a
symbol of cleansing and as a symbol of renewal. These days we
tend to recognize the throwing of large amounts of water as the
epitome of the Songkran festivities but is has always been the
more delicate water splashing that represents the gentle nature
of Songkran and the Thai New Year.
People also go to a wat (temple) to pray and give food to monks. They cleanse Buddha images by gently pouring scented water over them. In northern Thailand, people build stupa-shaped piles of sand and decorate them with colorful flags and flowers. | |||||||
When Is Songkran 2016?

Even though the origins of Songkran are
much more religion based, the splashing of complete strangers with water
is the main attraction of the water festival today. While sprinkling or
drenching people with water once predominately signified the washing
away of negative actions or thoughts and bringing good luck during the
New Year, once the formalities of the celebrations wind down, Songkran
2016 Thailand will turn into a major street party complete with dancing
in the streets, drinking and good natured water play.
